“Chief” Spokane Garry tours and talks

Spokane Garry, a tribal leader of the Spokane Tribe in the 1800’s, was a prominent figure in the settling of Spokane and the entire Columbia Plataea region. Dr. Beine has conducted significant research on the life of Garry and regularly gives talks about and leads tours associated with the life of this amazing man. Contact Dr. Beine to learn how you can book a lecture or tour.

Spokane Police and Sheriffs Academy

Spokane has over 25,000 refugees that now call our city “home.”  In recent years, local law enforcement personnel have had various negative encounters with members of these communities.   In the most serious of these cultural misunderstandings a refugee was wrongly charged and convicted of child luring, a crime for which he could have been deported back to the country that he had fled because of religious persecution.  The conviction, later recognized as an egregious cultural misunderstanding by local law enforcement and judicial agencies, was ultimately overturned.  On the basis of the increase of such cultural misunderstandings between these local agencies and the growing refuge communities I was contacted by the Spokane Police and Sheriffs Academy where my involvement was requested in creating a program that would help to bridge the growing cultural gap between these communities and our law enforcement officers.  To this end I worked with various local agencies to help develop training and materials for both the refugee communities and the law enforcement agencies.

Culture meets medicine:  Practical Approaches to Cultural Conflicts in Medicine- Providing Appropriate Health Care When Traditions Differ.

This seminar presented at University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine focused on the unique needs of San Diego's large immigrant population (from over 52 nations)  and helped health care providers develop ways to better address these needs.  Sponsored by UCSD School of Medicine, and Community and Family Medicine Department, University of California San Diego, Sand Diego, CA. I have also addressed the issue of culture and medicine in a lecture at the University of Washington Medical School in Spokane, WA .

Generational differences

Have you ever thought about how generational differences can affect working relationships?. MAF International asked for my assistance at navigating the generational differences between their home-based administrative team (mostly baby boomers and Gen X) and their field-based teams (mostly Millennial Generation).  I provided consultation, education and mediation. I have also addressed generational change in the workplace as seminars presented to the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine at Washington State University.

Parks and Rec Wrecks

People play by different rules.  And so do different cultures.  What happens when a collectivist, relationship-oriented community gets together to play softball in a neighborhood park surrounded by an individualistic and time oriented community?  How do leaders that come from these two communities communicate?  I have worked with the Spokane Parks and Recreation Department to address such issues, providing consultation services, education and mediation.

agri-culture 101

Community gardens are gaining popularity, particularly among refugee communities. Those who volunteer and manage these gardens aren’t always familiar with the backgrounds and experiences of their clients, however. I developed and conducted a workshop for the Washington State University Master Gardener Foundation that focuses on the importance of understanding Worldview and employing culture in the community garden setting and provided independent consultation at one of the local community gardens throughout the summer.
